'Boilich Clann Labhrainn' A Response to Recent MacLaren Attitudes By Sheila McGregor FSAScot April 1990

This document was written by Sheila McGregor FSAScot, Clan Gregor Centre Archivist and Clan Gregor researcher for many years in the late 20th century. It is a review of The MACLARENS a History of Clan Labhran, by Margaret MacLaren of MacLaren. 2nd edition 1984.

'Boilich Clann Labhrainn'

"If the writer had raised her eyes for a moment from the small world of Balquhidder Glen, she would have surprised, perhaps alarmed, to find members of Clan Gregor living throughout the period of her history to north, south, easy and west of her little band of MacLarens."

"For certainly, the official history of the Clan Laurin contains not a kind word about Clan Gregor. One of the more neutral observations occurs in a footnote on p27: "I have a perfect remembrance of a common saying in Balquhidder, when a boy, some 70 years since, viz.: when any extraordinary or marvellous tale was related the general remark was 'Oh! that is only Boilich Clan a Gregor'" in other words, nonsense. The writer applies thus phrase to the story about the part Clan Gregor played in the fight at St Angus Fair between the MacLarens and the Buchanans from Kilmahog; she says:"

McGregor points out correctly that the Gregor and McLarens lived side by side in Balquhidder, intermarried and had 'hand in glove' political and financial relationships since the 1500s. Some of her details have since come in to question with the release of material on the internet, but taken in general McGregor's review reveals an accurate representation of life between the two kindreds, which MacLarens does not.
